About GENASIS

GENASIS (Global ENvironmental ASsessment Information System) provides comprehensive information on contamination of the environment by chemicals, namely persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It was created in cooperation of RECETOX with IBA MU, institutes of the Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. Design and administration of the portal are supported by VaVpI CETOCOEN project.

GENASIS combines expertise, validated data from partner institutions, input from regular environmental monitoring programmes and provides data repository, analytical tools and data management. GENASIS user thereby receives all available up-to-date information on spatial and temporal trends in POPs concentrations in various environmental matrices (air, water, soil, biota and human tissues) that can be sorted, viewed and further analysed by using three GENASIS on-line tools: information portal, publishing platform and on-line data visualization.

Nationally, GENASIS forms an inextricable part of the overall environmental information system and its tools are designed to support in particular the implementation of the Stockholm Convention and other multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) as well as implementation of priorities relevant to the state environmental policy. It serves as data repository for long term and short term monitoring programmes as well as a visualization tool providing also data analysis and interpretation.

GENASIS can support regulators and many others in evaluation of effectiveness of the strategic plans and national policies as its design allows assessing anthropogenic effects spatially and dynamically in real time. In addition, information on corresponding ecological and health risks and dynamic changes relevant to the state of the environment complement the above information.

Moreover, GENASIS information and scientific materials such as case studies, scientific papers and reports including documentation on monitoring methodology can work as awareness raising, education and information exchange tool for both scientists and general public. The portal also displays news related to POPs and environment via its specialized section with article monitor.

We believe that GENASIS could also serve internationally and provide global information i.e. – to visualize the Global Monitoring Plan results and provide support for effectiveness evaluation of measures introduced globally. We believe that global potential of GENASIS merits to explored further by its potential users - international/global monitoring programmes, secretariats of MEAs and by all environment related UN and EU institutions.
