GENASIS and POPs GMP data repositories wowed audience in Washington

About 50 international scientists both from governments and academia and IT specialists met in the 5th GEO Health and Environment Community of Practice (CoP) Workshop organized by Global Earth Observation Secretariat at Marvin Center, George Washington University, Washington D.C., from 23-25 July 2013. This meeting serves as forum for earth observing communities in public health, medical and other areas, for taking stock of progress, information exchange, establishment of new partnership and planning future collaborations.


This meeting focused on connections with other GEO societal benefit areas including water and other Programs with related research or capacities. Main focus of presentations and case studies got HE-01 task – Tools and Information for Health Decision-Making, for example early-warning systems for malaria.

Two RECETOX and IBA MU representatives – Richard Hůlek and Jakub Gregor - provided meeting with information on progress in HE-02 task Tracking Pollutants featuring mercury and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with information on structure and tools of the data warehouse and portal developed by RECETOX and IBA MU in cooperation with the Stockholm Convention Secretariat for global levels of POPs and major instrument for Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on POPs and, finally, GENASIS (Global Environmental Information System). Participants appreciated design, global scope and status of progress for both tools presented by RECETOX and a number of prospective cooperation were initiated. As a follow up, both our IT warehouses and their tools and data will be registered and linked with the GEOSS in due time as well as their future development may potentially be also supported through GEO.
