Are glaciers a source of pollution for rivers in India?

Spatial analyses and map support of the GENASIS team was used in a recently published study in the high impact journal Environmental Pollution.

The study focused on investigating meltwater from Himalayan glaciers as a potential secondary source of polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to the Ganges watershed. Samples of water, air and deposition were taken at several sites along the Ganges River, from the source downstream to the lowlands. The results showed that the glacial meltwater can have a significant contribution to concentrations of selected pollutants in rivers of northern India, particularly in the dry season.
