Overview of new articles on POPs in a new issue of the Environmental Pollution journal.

Comparison of a bioremediation process of PAHs in a PAH-contaminated soil at field and laboratory scales

Pages 11-17
Christine Lors, Denis Damidot, Jean-François Ponge, Frédéric Périé

  • Laboratory experiment representative of PAH-contaminated soil biotreatment. Beta-proteobacteria: a good bioindicator to estimate the endpoint of biotreatment. Optimizing biotreatment conditions with a laboratory experiment. Monitoring biotreatment process with a laboratory experiment.

Levels, isomer profiles and chiral signatures of particle-bound hexabromocyclododecanes in ambient air around Shanghai, China

Pages 140-146
Huiru Li, Ligui Mo, Zhiqiang Yu, Guoying Sheng, Jiamo Fu

  • Five HBCD diastereoisomers (α-, β-, γ-, δ- and ɛ-) were investigated in this study. δ-HBCD was detected in air with higher percentages than technical products. HBCDs in air from industrial area showed statistically higher level than urban sites. Domination of α-HBCD in urban areas suggested the occurrence of isomer conversion. Chiral signatures showed enantioselective enrichment of (−)-α-HBCD in air of Shanghai.

Environmental policy, legislation and management of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China

Pages 182-192
Melody Hoi Yin Lau, Kenneth Mei Yee Leung, Stella Wing Yu Wong, Hong Wang, Zhen-Guang Yan

  • Since early 1980s, chemical pollution has become a serious environmental problem in rapidly developing China. This study reviewed the policy and legal framework for monitoring and management of chemical pollutants in China, with reference to the relevant experience in other jurisdictions.

The inventory of sources, environmental releases and risk assessment for perfluorooctane sulfonate in China

Pages 193-198
Lai Zhang, Jianguo Liu, Jianxin Hu, Chao Liu, Weiguang Guo, Qiang Wang, Hong Wang

  • Inventory of production and uses of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in China with geographical distribution. Characteristics of PFOS release sources and distribution consistent with social-economic situation in China. Effective model predicted results of PFOS environmental risk assessment in local and regional scales compared with relevant environmental monitoring data.
